About SHEDG

Our Background
The Sweet Home Economic Development Group, Inc. (S.H.E.D.G.) formed in 1989 to provide leadership in creating an economic development plan to overcome severe reductions in timber revenues. A committee worked with the Oregon Economic Development Department to analyze Sweet Home's strengths and weaknesses, and to identify economic development opportunities. Members of SHEDG, together with other residents of our community, considered the strengths and weaknesses and unique qualities of Sweet Home and developed the Strategic Plan for Community and Economic Development. They developed goals for four major building block categories:

  • Business Development: Increase and create family wage jobs through industrial and business recruitment, tourism opportunities, and by supporting existing businesses.
  • Workforce Development: Work with employers to determine workforce needs and with agencies to train employees. Encourage School-to-Work programs and student education.
  • Physical Infrastructure: Upgrade and expand the water and sewer systems to accommodate future needs. Storm drainage, flooding and sidewalk repair are other key areas.
  • Quality of Life: Create a safe community with affordable housing, social services, police and fire protection, and provide recreational opportunities.

The strategic plan charts the course to create a healthy, vital community for our children, future generations and us. Updates to the original plan continue to empower the community in its quest. In 1992, in an effort to raise funds for community projects, SHEDG sponsored the first annual Oregon Jamboree in Sweet Home. The Jamboree is the Northwest's largest annual country music and camping festival, featuring superstar entertainment for nearly 20,000 over its three days. Through the Jamboree a stable source of revenue is available for economic development. Many grants for economic development require matching funds, and Sweet Home is able to help grantees secure those grants from Jamboree earnings. Funds from the Jamboree also help support the retention of an economic development professional to aid the existing business community, encourage tourism and help recruit businesses to Sweet Home. The Sweet Home Economic Development Group, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c) 4 corporation governed by a nine member Board of Directors, which includes representation from civic groups, partnering organizations, the school district and local businesses.

SHEDG partners with other local organizations to help local businesses.  The Breakfast Club is an example of the collaboration of SHEDG with the Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce.  For more information consult the section of this website entitled "Business Information" which has a direct link on the main menu.
