Sweet Home
Photograph of the Weddle Covered Bridge by Roger Belknap Sweet Home is the last city on the Byway before the traveler drives through before heading into the mountains. Logging drew many of the earlier settlers to the area in the 1850's. The East Linn Museum contains artifacts from the ancient Kalapuya and Santiam Indian Tribes as well as historical items from mining and logging. Period clothing and furniture are a part of the reconstructed scenes of the early settlers. Sweet Home has an interesting murals painted throughout the community depicting the history of the area. The Weddle Covered Bridge is just two blocks south of the downtown area, and the accompanying city park provides space for events and community gatherings such as the Oregon Jamboree. Sweet Home and the Foster area are the final shopping stops for most provisions and gas. The community has number of good places to stop and eat, including the nostalgic A&W Restaurant, with its carhop, the Skyline Inn, one of the best breakfasts in town, and The Point Restaurant with excellent food and a magnificent view of Foster Lake. This is only the beginning of the list of eateries available in Sweet Home. Restaurants serving burgers, pizza, great Mexican food, tantelizing Chinese food and others specializing in home cooked meals are awaiting your visit. Weekday travelers will find local, regional and state information at the Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Information Center on Main Street. The Sweet Home Ranger District office is located on Highway 20, east of downtown, at which the visitor can obtain information, maps and guides of the forests, camping facilities and recreation areas. |
